www.earthheartfarm.com/earth-heart-herbal/herbal-reference-resources/healthy-liver-guidelines.html

I am mostly concerned about any correlation with the liver and acne/eczema.

Also, based on this page, I am “deficient”. (www.earthheartfarm.com/earth-heart-herbal/herbal-reference-resources/healthy-liver-guidelines/liver-yin-or-yang.html
How much of the following is true?

“Correcting Liver Deficiency:
The liver deficient mortal usually needs more chi (heat) or energy in their system. One way to incorporate this added heat or energy is through diet and medicinal herbs. The diet should include more high calibre protein, fats and oils, steamed vegetables, root vegetables, and warming foods. Decrease the intake of sweets, cold drinks, fruit juices, dairy, raw foods (even salads), and sweet juicy fruits.
Herbs specific for deficiency Oregon Grape Root, Barberry Root, Yellow Dock Root, Golden Seal Root, Nettle, Red Clover, Dandelion Leaf and Chaparral”

OH my goodness… where to start.

Okay you have a skin condition like acne, which is caused by bacteria. The liver is not part of the immune system, so even if you had a liver deficiency it wouldn’t affect your acne. Eczema is an autoimmune disorder. That is it is sort of an uncontrolled immune response. Again, nothing to do with the liver.

Also I’m not sure what they mean (I bet they don’t know what they mean) by “Liver Deficient”. Somehow I doubt they even understand what the function of the liver is in any detail.

The stuff about “chi (heat) or energy” is just nonsense. It means nothing. They are tossing around mystical terms to dazzle you so you’ll buy their products. I’m sure eating most of those foods would be fine, but it won’t ‘energize’ your liver because the human body just doesn’t work like that.

So go with the standard (evidence based) treatments for your acne and eczema. There are some non-pharmaceutical treatments for eczema, like capaiscin, which works as a counter-irritant, or menthol.

  2. China Traveler says:

When you are talking about having a “Liver Deficiency” you are speaking from a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) point of view. To increase the flow of Heat Qi (it is spelled “qi” not “chi”) in the Liver, one of the best acupoint you can rub is located on the top of the foot between the 1st & 2nd metatarsal bones near the tarsals. If you’re not familiar with the anatomy, refer to an A & P text book. This point may be very tender to the touch. Work it several times a day for a few days. This will increase the “free flow of qi” throughout the body and in the Liver.

I agree with the other respondent when she said that the Liver doesn’t really have much to do with the skin. In TCM, skin probs are a result of imbalance within the Lungs and/or Lg. Intestines.

As for her comment that “this qi stuff is non-sense” she obviously doesn’t know anything about Trad. Chinese Med., and therefore can not make any intelligent statement on the subject. The Chinese have been performing medical treatments on people suffering from a far range and varied types of diseases for more than 5,000 yrs. Many of which we still have no clue as to the etiology (causitive factor) and pathogenisis (path of development) of said diseases. So, she might want to educate herself before making such statements.

I would try some of the cures you’ve mentioned, or go to a Chinese Medical doctor for advice and possible treatment. But, also look at the Lungs & colon as being the possible root of the skin problems.

    Good luck!
