Question: Do you think the conception that diet has nothing to do with acne is not necessarily true?
I have done research on the subject and I have come to conclude that your diet has a HUGE impact on the condition of your skin. Here’s my reasoning: the body has a natural immune response to bacteria by inflaming the skin and fight the infection by providing white blood cells and raising the core body temperature to destroy the bacteria.

However, with proper nutrients and vitamins at your disposal, the oxidation process of the dermal layer of the skin would be significantly reduced due to the abundant supply of anti-oxidant material present. Therefore, bacteria would have less chance and time to multiply. What are your thoughts?

I’m 43 and had a love for sugary foods all my life. I’ve also had bad acne as a teenager and still have a tiny once in a while. I started drinking a green drink each day and have to state that my skin never looked better. So, yes, I do believe diet has something to do with it.

Free radicals like those found in Vitamin C help boost your immune system… So, wouldn’t that mean that you would get more acne? (I don’t actually believe it… but just a thought.) The oxidation process doesn’t have much to do with acne, though it has more to do with wrinkles and discoloration. I don’t think oxidation creates a better environment for bacteria. The way I’ve always known it is: Your blood contains urea which sometimes leaks out through your pores and your body treats the waste like an infection and causes acne.

that’s a terrible misconception. Diet has nothing to do with acne. It’s all about genetics, as well as pressure and friction. Don’t buy into the whole diet thing. I encourage everyone to eat right of course, but if you eat at McDonald’s everyday, it’s not going to make you have acne. Trust me. You’re being fed product propaganda from some unreliable sources. If you have acne and really, really want to get rid of it, go get a prescription for Accutane. It’s gotten a bad rap over the last few years, but it is by far the best, most effective acne medication ever invented. It can completely clear up the worst acne in 3-4 months. Talk to your doctor first though because you have to take blood tests.

Your oxidation theory is pretty complicated, interesting, but I see the occurance of acne more simply. Diet is a big factor, and so are hormones. Outbreaks of acne along with puberty and at certain points in the monthly cycle is evidence of the later. The skin is an organ of elimination–it expels toxins, so another factor is the actual surface condition of the skin–some applications, cosmetics, etc. clog the pores and trap bacteria, dirt, and oil that turn into pimples as the skin struggles to expel them.
A diet that keeps the body and blood healthy and the the other avenues of elimination–bowel and bladder–working properly will help. Cleansing will help, using a mild scrub like the apricot scrubs, not necessarily every time, helps. Rinsing very very well so that no soap is trapped in the pores helps. Drinking lots of water helps the elimination process in general.
When I worked as a nurse with adolescents, the most effective topical medication seemed to be benzoyl peroxide.
Bottom line is that the concept that diet has nothing to do with acne is wrong…and there are other factors. Good Luck.
