Question: Can you get yeast infections on dry areas of skin, such as around the mouth and chin?
Hi,
(19 years old, female) I have been battling perioral dermatitis off and on this past year and when I went to my acupuncturist who practices TCM (traditional Chinese medicine), she told me it was as I had thought; an overgrowth of candida on my skin. However, I recently saw my regular GP for some blood work, and he told me that the rash was likely Strep, or a bacterial infection, and prescribed me an antibiotic cream for it. While my acupuncturist had previously given me an antifungal cream, I have decided to test both of them out to see which is more effective by using one cream on one half of the infection, and the other cream on the other half. So far I have noticed the antifungal herbal cream gives a tingling sensation, the kind you feel when you can tell that a facial cleanser is really working. The antibiotic cream just feels like applying lotion on my skin. Other than that, I can’t tell a large difference between the two as it has only been one day.

In the mean time, I was trying to do some research on the facts; can you even get candida overgrowth on dry areas of skin? I generally have good skin- not too oily or dry and very tiny acne if any. However, my GP stated that the area around my mouth was absolutely not moist enough of an environment for yeast to thrive, and that the theory of getting a yeast infection there was ridiculous. He chocked it up to a new ‘candida overgrowth trend that has been recently circulating the internet.’ He also mentioned that if you had an internal yeast infection in your intestines that you would be incredibly deathly ill. I have read horror stories of internal yeast infections, but I can’t help but wonder if there are varying degrees of candida overgrowth in the intestines. My acupuncturist advised me to not consume any yeast and if possible, any sugar, because she believed it was doable I had too much yeast in my system as well as on my skin. I have stuck to a no sugar and yeast diet and it seemed to have helped a lot. My diet is generally extremely healthy and organic. My GP stated the cause for the rash was entirely rooted in stress, while my acupuncturist stated that the cause was candida overgrowth, and that stress was the cause of the flare ups. Her explanation also justified my extreme fatigue and very poor immune system. Over the past years, her methods of treatment and medicine have been far more effective for me than the drugs my GP has prescribed me, so I’m naturally more partial to TCM and acupuncture. I am also currently on no prescription medicine and have not been for 4 years.

*** So my question to you: is it doable to get any form of candida or yeast infection on a dry area of skin such as around the mouth and chin? Are there varying degrees in severity of an internal yeast infection such as in the intestines? ***

As of now this all seems to be a matter of view between Western and Eastern medicine, but I’m curious to know the facts and how well researched this topic is.
