Are there any natural preservatives to make home-made products last longer?
Question: Are there any natural preservatives to make home-made products last longer?
I make my own perfume, sprays, and scented (acne, moisturizing, and scar)lotions out of flowers for me and my friends, and it smells really good, but how do I make it last longer? Since flowers are ‘alive’, they begin to ‘decay’ after about a month and a half. Is there anything I can add to make it last longer? Since I make it myself it is all natural, and I feel bad for killing the flowers around the area I’m in, so I have a garden for this purpose. The only thing is I have to move for them to grow back before I can make more. My friends love this stuff, but hate the part when it goes bad. Plus in the winter, I can’t really depend on having any of the flowers bloom, so I rely solely on herbs. What can I do? Any preservatives (I think that’s the word?) I can use? Either natural or store purchased is fine as long it doesn’t interfere with the pretty aromas.

I think Rectified Spirit would be good preservative in this case.

Hey, Sarah Here,
I think this page will help you as it has tips and covers the various natural preservatives you can use.

I am just wondering also if part of the problem could be enzymatic activity from the fresh flowers which is just part of the decay process. Have you considered freeze drying your flowers to get around this as it would destroy those decaying enzymes. Air drying might work but then many of the essential oils that give your products their nice aroma might be vaporise away in the air drying process. Perhaps you could try making a flower glycerite with vegetable glycerine. That might conserve the aromatic oils and preserve the flowers.. Here is a recipe [under elderflower glycerite: http://www.a1-natural-beauty.com/Toner.html ]. Glycerine is also moisturising and has emollient and lubricating properties.
It looks like nowadays glycerine is being used to preserve wedding bouquets for those that want to do so [ http://lovemyweddingflowers.com/about.html ] …..don’t know what the bridesmaids and other female guests would make of that as they may look forward to that part of the ceremony too
Your products sound wonderful
Hope you find a solution …good luck with your ventures..
