Question: Any Herbalists or Naturopaths out there? – Vitex (Agnus Castus question)?
I have been taking Agnus Castus for 3 months and believe it has balanced my hormones. (I had been on the pill for 10 years and when I stopped in Dec 2010 I got hormonal acne, which has now cleared).

I have recently found out that I am 5 weeks pregnant. I have read a lot of things online which state you should stop taking AC immediately when you find out you’re pregnant, however I am concerned that stopping absolutely might cause my hormones to become unbalanced again, which could bring on a miscarriage.

I am so worried and confused and dont know what to do for the best, can someone please shed some informed light?

I am leaning towards gradually reducing my intake from 400mg per day, to 200mg per day, then each other day etc….

I have never taken herbal remedies before and so dont know if stopping them ‘cold turkey’ can have any negative effects?

You need to speak to your OB as soon as possible. Agnus Castus (aka chasteberry and vitex) does affect hormones. It doesn’t look like it can cause contractions, but it is considered unsafe during pregnancy and lactation. I have never had anyone experience problems stopping usage of vitex, but it is always best to speak to a physician when dealing with anything regarding pregnancy and childbirth.
