Acne Prone – Need Natural Skin Routine?

Question: Acne Prone – Need Natural Skin Routine?
Im 21, so my skin should be balancing out sometime soon. However, I still get some crazy breakouts once a month. Ive used Proactive, Mary Kay, Clearasil, Clean & Clear, Purity – Philosophy, Aveeno…. You study it, Ive tried it. Nothing seems to work.

I have Oily/Dry Combination Skin. Worst around my hairline and T-Zone, Some acne scars, sensitive to harsher chemicals (probably due to what Ive used on it).

What are some options for Cleanser, Toner, Mask, Lotion etc. brands or recipes I can use? Ive started using an egg mask, we’ll see if that works but I would LOVE more ideas!!

Here are some acne treatments that are natural and actually work:

Vitamin E (cream)- naturally heals scars by moisturizing the damaged skin

Cocoa butter-Cocoa Butter will soften skin, lighten the scars and make them fade into nothing

Honey-kills bacteria while simultaneously lessens the red look of irritated skin

Lemon-Fades scars and clears up acne

    Toothpaste-dries out pimples

    vinegar-dries out pimples

    alcohol-dries out pimples

    I hope this helps!

I like going green/natural/organic, so I buy my skin care things from the Sunflower Market, Whole Foods and other natural/organic stores.

I, too, have acne prone skin just like yours! So frustrating.

    Two suggestions:
First of all, do you wear makeup? If so, using a cleanser might not be enough for you. I use the “double cleansing method” -use a makeup removing cleanser or oil, rinse very well, THEN use a cleanser.

You said you break out on your hairline which means that you’re probably not washing all of the cleanser off and it’s clogging your pores. I’d recommend washing that area well, even if it gets your hair wet. Also, wash your face last in the shower so you get any conditioner residue off, and don’t use conditioner near your hairline. The only skin care line that worked for me was Clinique Acne Solutions, which TOTALLY cleared my skin up after a month of use…it has the acne fighting chemicals, but no fragrance, and it’s gentle.

    Twice a day routine:

    -Makeup remover
    -Clinique foaming acne wash
    -Clinique acne solutions toner
-salicylic acne gel (you can get this at a drugstore, no need to spend more on the Clinique one since the ingredients are essentially the same.)
-MOISTURIZE! I live in Japan now, so I use a Shiseido moisturizer, and I’m not sure if it is available in the U.S. or wherever you may be located…but I find that when I moisturize, I break out less, which seems kind of ironic.

Usually acne is a sign of some kind of internal problem. Just remember: forehead acne is likely due to stress or clogged pores, and the cheeks are hormonal. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep every night and take vitamins that are good for your skin -C, E, and A. Fish oil also helps if you don’t eat a lot of fish. (I eat fish almost daily in Japan, as well as pure soy, and less dairy, and my skin has cleared up.) Drink tea. Drink water. Avoid anything sugary that could cause internal inflammation.

An egg white mask is really good for acne prone skin. However, since you said you have an oily T-zone, I would recommend using the whites there and the yolks (more moisturizing) on your cheeks.

Here are some good recipes from a Singapore-based skin care blog (that I love!) The asprin and green tea mask is especially good, and I’ve found that using pure honey on my face as a mask for 15 minutes works well too:

Hello! I’m 16 and have the same skin combination as you. I know what you have been through spending so much money on acne products that don’t work. It’s depressing right?
I went through a phase where I though natural remedies would work. I tried EVERYTHING. Even the egg mask your talking about. They provide minimum if ANY results, trust me.
What you need to do is get a routine that is healthy for the skin and STICK WITH IT. That is the hardest part. When I finally decided to stick to my current skin care routine, after a month(I know that seems like a long time, but it’s worth it) my skin looked better than it had in four years(I got acne extremely early…)

    Only products I use:
    Purpose Daily Facial Wash
    Retin-A Micro (Prescription)
    Differin (Prescription)
    Neutrogena Spf 15 Oil-Free Moisturizer
    Apricot Scrub

I use Purpose every morning and night. I use Retin-A micro every other night, ONLY at night, and you cannot use it as spot moisturize you must use it all moisturizers. Differin every night, only on nose(for blackheads). Neutrogena Moisturizer every morning after shower, and be for makeup if I’m going to wear some. And the Apricot Scrub everyday around lunch if I’m at home, or after I get home, not scrubbing hard, very light.

I’ve been using this routine for almost 2 months and WOW. I have NO acne what so ever on my face. None. The only thing I have to worry about now is my acne scars, which I’ve read will fade over the next few months. :)

You may want to see a dermatologist to be prescribed the two products I mentioned. They are really great. Your first month is always the worst. Your skin will get dry and flake because it’s WORKING.

IF you do not want to see a derm, just get a gel, there is a drug store brand one i just can’t thing of the name…but it had Benzole peroxide 10% and that could substitute for both prescribed products.

Natural is not ALWAYS the way to go. Even though it is good to treat your skin with the best non harsh products available.

Even though doctors say diet isn’t related to acne, if you eat fruits and veggies with each meal your skin can improve. Water (8 cups) daily is a must. Oil free makeup if you wear it.

    I hope I helped. :)
    good luck.

ps a good acne mask is Queen Helen’s Mint Julep Mask, usually 3-4$ at Walgreen’s. it’s the BEST. :)
