A few questions about my 4 day old?

Question: A few questions about my 4 day old?
He had a bit of jaundice Sunday, and we had to go back today. Its higher, so we have to go AGAIN tomorrow.

What are some natural home remedies for it?? (Its night, so no sunlight lol)

He has baby acne. There’s nothing I can do right?

How often do you place lotion on? Is each night (after his face and bottom wipe down) ok?

How much should I hope/expect to pump the first time? (Majorly engorged) If I have to refrigerate it for maybe 18 hours, how long will it last in the freezer?

How long/to what age does he need to wear a hat?
Actually my milk came in REALLY quick, Sunday night/Monday morning. (Its Tuesday night here) He was starving on just the colostrum.

you need to talk with your baby’s pediatrician

okay my baby is 17 days old now and he was a bit yellow for the first few days because he wouldnt eat. fortunately we came home and he is catching on. he needs to eat in order for that to go away..i dont think you need to put lotion on him, i didnt put lotion on my baby until i gave him a sponge bath when he 8 days old and then i put a little on after the bath. you wont pump much at first, just keep pumping and more will start coming. good luck!

I don’t know that there are many, if any, natural remedies for jaundice save for continuing breastfeeding, and the bili lights.

Baby acne is very normal, and will resolve itself. Wash it gently with only warm water and a soft baby washcloth. It will probably clear up in a few weeks.

Look to your baby’s skin for clues as to whether he needs lotion. I lotioned mine every other day, and bathed every other day. Daily bathing for a baby can dry the skin out. If his skin feels scaly, lotion. If it feels soft, or slick, no lotion.

Your first few pumping sessions may only yield a couple of ounces. You shouldn’t be pumping more than that right now because what you are producing right now is colostrum – which is your babys first food and very important for immunity and a whole lot of other things – to include reducing any jaundice. Colostrum should not be saved in the fridge as it quickly loses nutritional value. Try to establish breastfeeding well before pumping.

As far as a hat, my son kept one on during the night and day for the first several weeks, I just changed it frequently. He was born in the fall and it was chilly. If baby is swaddled however, remove the hat to avoid overheating.

Ugh, my kids all had jaundice. Bad news, he will be jaundiced a bit longer since you are nursing. Good news, aside from the sunlight, there isn’t much you can do. It usually clears right up on its own and isn’t too much to worry about. Just follow the doctors advice and keep an eye out for any of the things your doc wants you to keep an eye on.

Baby acne? Nope, nothing you can do. It’ll clear up.

I put lotion on my babies after their baths and right away in the morning. I just liked how it smelled, so I probably overkilled it..lol

How much you will express will really vary. I seem to remember it’s normal to express anywhere from 1/2oz-4 oz at first. I was able to express 8 oz right away (you can imagine how much fun being engorged was..lol) Be careful though on pumping to relieve engorgement The more you pump, the more you’ll make. Just pump enough to soften the breast so your baby can latch. You don’t want to constantly be engorged.

You can refrigerate breastmilk for up to 8 days, you can put it in a normal freezer for 3 months, 6 months in a deep freeze. You’ll want to shake it up before using it. Thaw it under warm water.

Last, the hat. Are you talking those funny little stocking caps? I kept my babies in them for about 2-3 weeks maybe. After that, it was only if it went with the outfit. It’s just to keep them warm so they don’t lose heat. If he seems warm,I wouldn’t worry about the hat, I just did it because it looked cute…lol

    Good luck and congrats!

Im not sure about the jaundice remedies, I just know BM is great for it, b/c the more they poop the better..and BM will do a good job getting him to go.

If you want to lotion him..just once a day is okay

Do NOT worry about what you can pump. If you are engorged the only reason you need to pump is to relieve a little pressure in which case try not to pump out more than an ounce, or youll be telling your body to make more and more.
But if you do pump and save some..its good for up to 8 days in the back of a refrigerator and 3-6 months in a freezer

and I kept a hat on my baby for maybe the first week..after that she didnt use one anymore

What are some natural home remedies for it?? – Nurse, nurse and nurse some more – breast milk will help flush it out, do NOT let your doctor talk you into formula, it is NOT necessery to flush out jaundice.

He has baby acne. There’s nothing I can do right? – just wipe with a wet wash cloth a few times a day, it will go away within a few weeks (due to the hormones from birth).

How often do you put lotion on? Is every night (after his face and bottom wipe down) ok? – I only put lotion on if Elyse has a bath or feels really dry (when she was a newborn 1-3 times a week). I wouldn’t put lotion on his face since he has the baby acne. Make sure to use a good lotion (Aquaphore is the best, most “baby” lotions are actually quite drying), California baby is good too. You could also just use olive oil or apricot oil.

How much should I hope/expect to pump the first time? (Majorly engorged) If I have to refrigerate it for maybe 18 hours, how long will it last in the freezer? – First time I pumped I had an oversupply so I pumped 4 oz, it is normal to only get an oz or two. The best way to get rid of engorgement is to nurse, let baby regulate your milk supply, not a pump. You don’t want to pump too often between nursing sessions, it will only make your engorgement worse. It will last in the freezer for 3 months.

How long/to what age does he need to wear a hat? – if he is inside he doesn’t need one anymore unless it is drafty. Wear one outside until it is warmer out.

Also, your baby wasn’t “starving” on colostrum – frequent feeds are very normal for a young baby, keep up the good work mama!
